An international research collaboration that includes the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has discovered that aging in nematodes (worms) can be slowed and even reversed by a number of Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs, findings that have the potential to extend human lifespan.

The study findings are published in Scientific Reports.

As residents and volunteers clean up after flooding in the state, the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) urges anyone involved in cleanup to be aware of the health risks. Flood water and sewer overflows can contain bacteria, viruses, and other organisms that cause disease.

These basic precautions and cleaning tips for your home can help to keep you safe and healthy:

-Avoid skin contact with flood water, and keep cuts and sores clean and covered.

-Do not allow children to play in flood water.

-Do not eat or drink anything exposed to flood water.

Medicare has many confusing choices, so Mercy Fort Smith is offering help to navigate the process.

Medicare – Getting Started is a free educational seminar from 2-4 p.m. the first Tuesday each month at the Fort Smith Public Library branch at 8100 Dallas St. The seminars are for those soon to become eligible for Medicare.
Sessions will include information on parts A & B and part D (prescription coverage) and information on the differences between part C (Medicare Advantage) and medicare supplement insurance plans.

The 16th annual CHI St. Vincent Golf Classic, presented by Chreyton Electric, raised more than $120,000 to help support the hospital’s mission to provide excellent and compassionate care for more Arkansans. Thirty four teams competed in the four-man scramble held at the Chenal Country Club.

“We’re thankful to all our players and sponsors who made this year’s Golf Classic a success,” said Laura Cook, senior vice president of the CHI St. Vincent Foundation. “Their support of our healing ministry will lead to advancements in patient care right here in central Arkansas.”
