For the first time in the state’s 184-year history, a medical student has earned a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree in Arkansas.

New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University, which became the first osteopathic medical school in the state when it opened its doors in 2016, celebrated the commencement and hooding of its inaugural class in a virtual ceremony held recently.

Arkansas Children’s has a message for families striving to protect their children during the COVID-19 pandemic: The best thing they can do is stay on top of vaccines, routine check-ups, and preventive healthcare for their kids.

A national trend indicates many children are skipping annual check-ups and vaccines that keep them healthy as cautious families postpone doctor’s visits. Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) in Little Rock and Arkansas Children’s Northwest (ACNW) in Springdale have seen this scenario play out in the state.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has developed guidelines to help high school and collegiate sports teams plan to safely resume activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The UAMS COVID19 Sports Committee that drafted the recommendations and considerations included experts from sports medicine, orthopaedic surgery, family medicine, pathology, and infectious disease.

New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University (NYITCOM) recently received two grants from the Keys Foundation totaling $50,000.  Both grants will be used to help the medical school mentor high school and undergraduate students and help them prepare for careers in science and/or medically related fields.

A community drive-thru evaluation clinic for COVID-19 will be held from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., May 23 at Saint Mark Baptist Church, 5722 W. 12th St. in Little Rock. There will be no out-of-pocket cost to the patient.

The clinic is conducted by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) along with Saint Mark Baptist Church, the City of Little Rock, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, the Arkansas Minority Health Commission, the Consulate of Mexico in Little Rock, and the National Urban League of the State of Arkansas.
