The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences’ (UAMS) Institute for Digital Health & Innovation has received a three-year, $1.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to create a community-based emergency response program Little Rock schools.

“We are grateful to have been awarded these funds by the Department of Justice and look forward to improving safety infrastructure for our partner schools,” said Joseph Sanford, MD, the institute’s director.

A second case of avian influenza, also known as the bird flu, has been detected in a backyard flock in southwest Louisiana, the state Department of Agriculture and Forestry reported Thursday.

Earlier this week, the state’s first backyard avian flu case was reported in northwest Louisiana. State officials have not identified the type of birds involved in either case but said it involves a non-commercial, “non-poultry” flock, just like the instance reported Monday.

The 19th annual Miracle Ball, a shared project of Arkansas Children’s Foundation and Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) Auxiliary, raised more than $1 million, benefiting ACH.

Members of the ACH Auxiliary support Arkansas Children’s programs by volunteering their time and generating statewide donations. Money raised from Miracle Ball will go towards the $6.25 million commitment the auxiliary made in support of the expansion project last year.

Ross and Mary Whipple pledged $1.5 million to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), supporting rural cancer care, patient services, and orthopaedics.

The gifts include $1 million to establish the Ross and Mary Whipple Family Community Outreach and Engagement Fund for Excellence in the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, $250,000 to The Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital at UAMS, and $250,000 to establish the Nancy “Jo” Smith Special Services Fund for Excellence.

Seven members of the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University (NYITCOM at A-State) Class of 2025 matched into U.S. military residencies and will perform their Graduate Medical Education (GME) in conjunction with service to their country.
