NYITCOM at A-State Students, Alumni Match to Military Residencies

Three members of the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University Class of 2024 and one alumnus of the institution recently matched into U.S. military residencies and will perform their graduate medical education in conjunction with service to their country.

NYITCOM at A-State student doctors who participated in the military match include Brad Carley (Army), who matched into the anesthesiology program at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas; Kaitlyn Stasiewicz (Navy), psychiatry at Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va.; and Charles Wood (Army), diagnostic radiology at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

Additionally, Brandon Chung, MD, matched into the orthopedic surgery program at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in Ft. Bliss, Texas. Chung graduated from NYITCOM at A-State in 2022 and completed a preliminary general surgery year at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. He then spent a year serving as a flight surgeon with the U.S. Army and will now continue his medical training at Ft. Bliss.

Shane Speights, D.O., is the dean of NYITCOM at A-State and is also a Major (O-4) in the U.S. Army National Guard attached to the Arkansas Medical Command (MED DET) unit based at Camp Robinson. Those roles give him a special appreciation for NYITCOM students and alumni who are committed to military service.

“I just can’t say enough about how proud I am of these four individuals,” Speights said. “All four of them matched into extremely competitive specialties, which says a lot about their work and dedication.”

Speights noted that only one percent of all the physicians in the United States are serving in our military.
