NYITCOM Medical Students to Ride with Medic One Ambulance During Emergency Medicine Rotations

New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University has reached an agreement with Medic One Ambulance that will allow third-year medical students to ride with the Jonesboro-based ambulance company as part of their emergency medicine rotation.

“We’re grateful that Medic One is providing our medical students with this unique opportunity that gives our students a view of how emergency care is delivered well beyond the hospital,” said Amanda Deel, DO, associate dean of academic affairs at NYITCOM at A-State.  “Through our partnership with Medic One, our medical students will gain invaluable inter-professional training as they learn from the paramedics. It’s a tremendous experience for them.”

During their four-week emergency medicine rotation, NYITCOM students will spend two days on a Medic One ambulance working with their crews and learning more about the types of situations first responders encounter.

“It’s a win-win situation for us,” said Medic One President Ryan Kibler. “I think it really helps the medical students to see how patients are cared for from the time the ambulance arrives on the scene to the time the person gets to the hospital. There’s a lot that happens during that time and it’s really beneficial for them to experience it all and gain a better understanding. For us, our team benefits from being around the student doctors, and it gives us a chance to be a good corporate citizen by supporting the local medical school. We’re proud to partner with NYITCOM.”

In medical school, student doctors spend their first two years in classroom and laboratory settings. In their third year, they begin performing clinical rotations - or clerkships - where they see patients alongside a licensed physician to receive hands-on training in a hospital or clinic. Their third-year rotations expose them to each of the general specialties. They spend four weeks working in obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, family medicine, and emergency medicine, while their general surgery and internal medicine rotations last eight weeks.

NYITCOM at A-State has partnered with more than 150 hospitals, clinics, and physicians in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Tennessee to train student doctors during their third and fourth years. Medic One becomes NYITCOM’s latest clinical education partner.
