The 25th Annual Family Medicine Update with Free Tobacco and Disease Symposium at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will offer up to 16 hours of online continuing education Oct. 26 - 29 for primary care physicians, doctors of osteopathic medicine, advanced practice registered nurses, registered nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, and certified health educators.
The conference is completely virtual. Courses are offered in two-hour blocks, twice daily, at $40 per block. The tobacco symposium on Oct. 29 is being offered at no charge.

The conference will feature talks on COVID-19 vaccines for cancer patients with Kristin Zorn, MD, as well as updates on variants and vaccines from Jose Romero, MD, Arkansas secretary of health. Romero not only leads the Arkansas Department of Health but also is the chairman of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s advisory committee on immunization practices and a professor in the UAMS College of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics.
Dariush Mozaffarian, MD, DrPH, will speak on food as medicine. Mozaffarian is the dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy at Tufts University in Massachusetts. He has authored more than 450 scientific publications on dietary priorities for obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, and on evidence-based policy approaches and innovations to reduce these burdens in the United States and globally. He has served in numerous advisory roles, and his work has been featured in a wide array of media outlets. Thomson Reuters has named him one of the world's most influential scientific minds.
Other topics include human papillomavirus (HPV) with Heather Brandt, PhD, from St. Jude Children’s Hospital HPV Cancer Prevention Program, and a colorectal cancer screening success story from Keith Winfrey, MD, MPH, who helped his New Orleans clinic’s screening rate jump from three percent to 80 percent.
A full day will be dedicated to tobacco and disease with discussions on lung cancer screening, COPD, vaping, and nicotine in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
