UAMS orthopaedic surgeons taught high school students to suture, cast and repair fractures as part of the Perry Outreach Program, a day-long course of workshops and lectures on Nov. 19, 2016.
The course is a program of The Perry Initiative, a national nonprofit, which aims to increase the number of women in orthopaedics and engineering through hands-on outreach programs targeted to female students in high school, college and medical school.
Ruth Thomas, MD, UAMS orthopaedic foot specialist, and Theresa Wyrick, MD, UAMS orthopaedic hand specialist instructed the students on:
- Suturing, casting and attaching external fixation (a device used to set and stabilize broken bones)
- Treating scoliosis, reconstructing knee ligaments and making IM nails (rods inserted into the bone center).
