A group to help children ages 6-12 better cope with a parent’s cancer diagnosis is set to begin Feb. 8 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute
CLIMB, which stands for Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery, will be offered from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesdays from Feb. 8-March 15 at the UAMS Cancer Institute.
There is no cost to participate, and you do not have to be a UAMS patient to participate. Preregistration is required. To register, call Darby Harmon, MSW, LMSW, at (501) 603-1612 or email drharmon@uams.edu.
CLIMB is designed to support both children and their parents.
While children participate in art and other projects to help them process emotions such as sadness, anxiety, and fear, their parents meet separately to discuss ways to talk about their illness with their children and deal with cancer’s impact on their family.
Oncology social workers lead both the children’s group and parents’ group. Siblings are welcome to attend together.
