UAMS Says Proton Center Continues Operating Amid Payment Dispute

UAMS has issued notices of default to Proton International Arkansas LLC over delays in payments owed for UAMS physicians and staff working under contract with the Proton Center of Arkansas, according to a statement provided to the Healthcare Journal of Arkansas.

“The Center continues to operate but we cannot continue giving away free services,” said Leslie Taylor, vice chancellor for communications and marketing at UAMS.

In a statement, UAMS said payment has not been received for several months for services provided by UAMS physicians and staff under contract with Proton International Arkansas. UAMS said that, as a state-supported institution, it has federal and state legal obligations that prohibit providing uncompensated services.

The Proton Center, located on the UAMS campus in Little Rock, is Arkansas’ only proton therapy cancer treatment center. UAMS said patient care is continuing without interruption.“UAMS remains committed to proton therapy as a critical component of advanced cancer treatment in Arkansas and will continue to work toward a resolution with all parties that protects patients and meets our legal obligations,” the statement said.

The default notices triggered a required disclosure filing by Proton International Arkansas through the Electronic Municipal Market Access system, according to UAMS.
