New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University (NYITCOM at A-State) is now accepting applications for its annual summer program, Project H.E.A.R.T. (Health Education Advocacy Reflection and Training), which will be held on A-State’s Jonesboro campus June 23-26.
Project H.E.A.R.T. is a four-day/three-night residential camp intended to further NYITCOM at A-State’s mission to develop Arkansans for service in the Delta Region. There is no cost to the student.
“The program is a one-of-a-kind experience that can open doors to enlighten students about future career opportunities in healthcare and to the overall well-being of their community,” said Brent Owens, Ed. D., NYITCOM associate director of pipeline programs and Project H.E.A.R.T. director.
Project H.E.A.R.T. gives students a chance to learn about healthcare and higher education while participating in fun educational activities. Campers tour NYITCOM facilities and learn about a day in the life of a medical student, including the opportunity to dissect a porcine heart in the anatomy lab. Students receive tours of northeast Arkansas’ two biggest hospitals - NEA Baptist Hospital and St. Bernard’s Medical Center - where they learn about the many different medical professionals that play a role in delivering healthcare. They also hear from Arkansas State University faculty who give them an overview of how to prepare for college and some of the career paths available to them.
Evening activities include a movie night and recreation time at the Red WOLF Center. NYITCOM medical students serve as counselors for Project H.E.A.R.T.
Students applying for Project H.E.A.R.T. must be a high school student entering 11th or 12th grade in August of 2020, must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher, and must meet the eligibility guidelines as outlined in the child nutrition program. Project H.E.A.R.T. is aimed at students who would benefit from an opportunity to excel.
The application process is competitive. Applications must be completed along with two letters of recommendation from the school’s faculty or staff as well as a personal statement. Applications must be returned and postmarked no later than Feb. 14. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
Applications are available online, through the student’s high school guidance counselor, or by contacting the NYITCOM Office of Clinical Education at (870) 680-8891. Interested students can also email Miyah Washington at miyah.washington@nyit.edu.
