Researcher Terry Harville, MD, PhD, of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), has published a major study that for the first time links autism spectrum disorder to a specific genetic variation affecting the immune system.

The study, published in the Frontiers of Psychiatry, found that a genetically inherited immune type HLA-Cw7 was present in much higher numbers in people with autism as compared to the general population.

Arkansas Children’s Inc. has promoted Ashlie Hilbun, EdD, CFRE, to the position of senior vice president and chief strategy officer, leading planning efforts, advancing business strategy, and overseeing strategic marketing for the state’s only pediatric health system.

Hilbun’s promotion follows three years of leadership with the Arkansas Children’s Foundation, where she most recently served as vice president of philanthropy, co-leading the system’s overall fundraising strategy and crafting external messaging and storytelling.

Plans to build Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital Fort Smith are becoming more of a reality thanks to the recent land donation by the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education (ACHE).

In June, Kindred Healthcare, LLC and Mercy announced that they had signed a definitive agreement and created a joint venture to construct and operate a 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital, called Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital Fort Smith. Kindred will manage day-to-day operations of the facility.
