In January of 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak of a new coronavirus disease in Hubei Province, China to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. WHO stated there is a high risk of the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) spreading to other countries around the world.

The following is the introduction from the World Health Organization's Director-General's opening remarks during today's media briefing on COVID-19:
"Good afternoon.
"In the past two weeks, the number of cases of COVID-19 outside China has increased 13-fold, and the number of affected countries has tripled.
"There are now more than 118,000 cases in 114 countries, and 4,291 people have lost their lives.
"Thousands more are fighting for their lives in hospitals.
