The public is invited to hear Nobel laureate Harold Varmus, MD, an expert in cancer biology and former director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Cancer Institute (NCI), at 8:30 a.m. on March 12 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

The free lecture, “Cancer Research: Then and Now,” will be held in the I. Dodd Wilson Education Building auditorium. Varmus is giving the Robert E. McGehee Jr., PhD, Distinguished Lectureship in Biomedical Research as part of the UAMS Graduate School’s annual Student Research Day.

Lawrence (Larry) Quang, MD, has joined Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine as chief of pediatric emergency medicine, pharmacology, and toxicology. He will also serve as professor of pediatrics and emergency medicine in the UAMS College of Medicine.

The Respiratory Care Services Department at Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) has received an elite honor from the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC), which named it a recipient of the 2019-2020 Apex Recognition Award. Arkansas Children’s Hospital is the only hospital in the state and one of only two children’s hospitals across the nation to receive this year’s designation. Only 12 awards were given to acute care hospitals nationally.

A free seven-week program sponsored by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is ready to help smokers kick the habit.

The small-group Freedom from Smoking program will be offered from 5-6:30 p.m. for seven Tuesdays starting Feb. 26 in Room 1202 of the Rahn Interprofessional Education Building at UAMS. There is no cost to participate.
