Lawrence Greiten, MD, MSc, has joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine as a cardiothoracic surgeon and will practice at the Heart Center at Arkansas Children’s.
He will serve alongside Brian Reemtsen, MD, who took the helm as director of the Arkansas Children’s Heart Center last year.
The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) received an update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over the weekend on the five suspected cases of Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM) in Arkansas. Of the suspected cases this year, three are now confirmed cases, while the other two have been determined to not be cases. These cases are part of the CDC’s nation-wide investigation of AFM.
Shane Speights, DO, dean, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State (NYITCOM at A-State), announced the formation of a new fellowship program in coordination with NYITCOM at A-State and the office of Representative Rick Crawford (AR-1).
National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) focuses on the many ways parents can reduce children’s exposure to lead in their environment and prevent serious health effects from lead poisoning. To raise awareness of childhood lead poisoning prevention, the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH), along with other agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, participated in NLPPW during Oct. 21-27.
All healthcare providers – from clinic staff to pharmacists to physicians – play a part in helping a patient quit tobacco. The 2018 Tobacco and Disease Symposium, set for 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Nov. 16 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), will offer up to eight accredited continuing education hours addressed to each role.
The cost is $50, or $25 for half a day, for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and social workers. The cost for students and medical residents is $25.
